Duke of Edinburgh residential charters

Throughout the season we run a limited number of voyages especially for individual young people wishing to sail as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Our vessel Duet is particularly suited to meet the requirements of the Gold Residential section of the award.

Anyone taking on the challenge of a sailing voyage with us will meet their sailing companions for the first time as they step on board but will very quickly get to know them as teamwork begins immediately.  The group generally consists of six young people and two professional crew who are responsible for the safety of the group whilst on board.

After arriving at the vessel, the first duty is planning and provisioning the vessel on a budget - this has to be done before leaving port - it's an excellent ice breaker. Following this, the professional crew will lead discussions on voyage options and passage planning - this may be a trip across the channel or exploration of the local coast, depending on the weather conditions and the choices made by the group as whole.

After setting sail, everyone becomes a valuable member of the crew taking a full part in sailing and running the vessel. Most of those on board (apart from the professional crew) will have little or no experience of sailing but within a very short time the boat will feel like home and friendships will be formed. It may also be possible for participants to complete the RYA Competent Crew Award during the voyage.
