RYA training and certificates

These certificates are recognised worldwide and can be used towards progression in a sailing career.  More generally, amongst the young people who sail on our vessels, they form part of an accredited training programme and play an important role in an individual's self development through an increase in knowledge and self confidence. 

Start Yachting

This course provides a short introduction to sail cruising.  During the training, participants will experience steering, sail handling, rope work and basic safety. This certificate can be gained on voyages lasting a weekend or longer.

Competent Crew

This course instructs the non-sailor in basic seamanship, helmsmanship and personal safety to a level required to be a useful member of crew on board a cruising yacht. This certificate can be gained on voyages lasting 5 days or longer. For those individuals within a group who find it difficult to complete all the tasks, a Start Yachting Certificate may be awarded instead.

Costs

The cost of both certificates on board The Trust's vessels is £9 to cover the cost of the log book and certificate. There is no extra charge to undertake the training.
