Facilities

The vessel has a large open plan galley and saloon area where the long table is a feature and easily seats all on board. The well equipped galley has ample storage an industrial size cooker, two domestic size fridges, a freezer and a double sink. Sleeping accommodation consists of 12 bunks situated forward on either side of the vessel with a further 4 bunks in two separate cabins. There are three toilet and wash areas, all have hot and cold running water.

Areas of operation

Queen Galadriel starts her season in Ipswich, Suffolk before heading south to operate from ports on the south coast for the summer. From here she can explore the south coast and make regular crossings to the Channel Islands and France. Queen Galadriel also competes in the Tall Ships' Race to foreign ports and other maritime festivals.

Group numbers

The maximum group number (including leaders) for sail training voyages must not exceed 16, all of whom must be aged 12 years or over. We recommend at least two leaders within the group, or more depending on the needs of the young people. For private charters and adult day sails, the maximum number of passengers on board must not exceed 12. The sailing staff includes a Skipper, Mate, Bosun and often a fourth hand.

History

Queen Galadriel, a Baltic Trader is 32.9 metres long with a beam of 6.6 metres. She was built in 1937 in Svenborg, Denmark and was originally named 'Else' after the Captain's daughter. Queen Galadriel traded as a cargo vessel around the coasts of Denmark and Norway, initially as a motor sailor but after 1956 under motor alone. By 1970, the need for such vessels as Else had ceased and her future became uncertain.

In 1983, she was bought by The Cirdan Sailing Trust and went into service renamed 'Queen Galadriel' after a character in Tolkein's 'Lord of The Rings'.

After twenty years in the business of sailing residentials she was taken out of service during 2003 for a major structural refit. This involved replacement of the keel, extensive re-planking, installation of watertight bulkheads and renewal of all the electrical and mechanical systems. The opportunity was used to completely redesign and renew all below deck accommodation.

Queen Galadriel returned to service in May 2004 to continue her important role in working with young people.
